29 new coronavirus cases reported in Beaufort County Thursday

Twenty-nine new coronavirus cases were reported in Beaufort County on Thursday, bringing the total to 130 overall, according to a S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control release.

The new cases nearly tripled the 10 reported Wednesday in the county, which had its first cases reported March 14.

There were no new deaths reported Thursday.

On Tuesday, the death of a 72-year-old Beaufort man who had an underlying health condition became the second coronavirus death reported in Beaufort County, said Beaufort County Chief Deputy Coroner David Ott. He said the man died at Beaufort Memorial Hospital at 2:48 p.m.

On Monday, an 81-year-old Beaufort man was the county’s first documented coronavirus-related death. The man had underlying health conditions and died from acute respiratory failure caused by the virus after being treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Ott said.

There are 261 new cases reported across the state, bringing the total cases in South Carolina to 1,554.

DHEC also released an updated listing of which ZIP codes each patient lives in. The ZIP code data includes only 87 of Beaufort County’s cases.

**Note: The ZIP code data provided by DHEC says there are five cases on Parris Island. On Monday, the base said there were more than 20 cases at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island. On Tuesday, the Department of Defense ordered the military installations in South Carolina to stop making data about COVID-19 tests public.

The agency said last week it had a COVID-19 testing backlog for the virus after experiencing a shortage of necessary chemicals, which resulted in a spike in reported cases over the weekend.
