Beaufort Co. school board to hold meeting online during SC schools’ coronavirus close

After canceling meetings through the end of March, Beaufort County School District’s Board of Education will hold its April 7 meeting — but not at Beaufort’s County Council chambers, where it was scheduled to take place.

Instead, board chairwoman Christina Gwozdz said, the meeting will take place virtually and be livestreamed and broadcast on the County Channel for the public. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

As of Monday, Gwozdz said the board has not rescheduled a canceled joint meeting with Jasper County’s school board to discuss their co-ownership of the Beaufort-Jasper Academy of Career Excellence.

School board members also have not scheduled a planned joint meeting with Beaufort County Council, which approves the district’s budget every year. Potential dates for that meeting were April 8 and 15. Both the board and council are currently considering an impact fee for South of the Broad residential development, which could raise the cost of bulding new homes by several thousand dollars.

The board has a lot of ground to cover from its canceled March 17 meeting. The agenda for that meeting included a presentation on the results of a personnel efficiency study, an update on referendum construction from a community oversight committee and a vote to approve a calendar for the 2020-21 school year.

The board has not yet released the agenda for its April 7 meeting.
