How will net neutrality repeal affect Lowcountry internet? Here's what Hargray says

Are you worried about what might happen to your internet service following the Federal Communications Commission’s vote to repeal net neutrality rules on Thursday? Local internet provider Hargray Communications understands.

In a press release Friday, the telecommunications company, which provides internet service for many in Beaufort County, said that it was committed to maintaining free and open access to internet content.

“Hargray is announcing a customer pledge that includes commitments to not change how it operates as a result of the FCC’s recent repeal of net neutrality,” the press release said.

Their release also says that they will not throttle content, a process by which access to certain websites can be sped up or slowed down. Nor will they take money from internet content providers to provide priority access to their sites.

They also pledged in the release to never sell customers’ private data, and to not charge their customers more to access certain content that would otherwise be freely accessible over the internet.

While promising not to charge customers more to access specific types of content, the Hargray release does not discuss the possibility of their overall rates going up following the repeal.
