What does the Wall Street Journal have to say about the Daufuskie real estate market?
The “up and downs of the market” for homes on Daufuskie Island were the subject of a story published Thursday by the Wall Street Journal.
The piece, written by Nancy Keates, describes the island as “near-wilderness” where “eagles fly overhead, and dolphins arch from the water as if on cue.”
Located on this “idyllic spot” are “three luxury golf communities — one prospering, one deteriorating, and one hanging on,” Keates writes.
Haig Point — the community described as prospering — is “home to wealthy retired business executives and professionals,” according to the Wall Street Journal piece.
Real estate prices in the 265-home community are on the rise and 35 new houses are expected to be built by 2020, Keates reports.
The story juxtaposes Haig Point’s recent success with the turmoil at the bankrupt Melrose Resort, which is “decaying” and features “a Jack Nicholas-designed golf course covered in weeds.”
The third community, Bloody Point Golf Club and Beach Resort, occupies a space somewhere between Melrose and Haig Point, according to the story.
The resort is losing money, but unlike Melrose “Bloody Point Club and it’s facilties are still up and running,” Keates writes.
“Of the 112 buildable lots in Bloody Point, 21 homes have been constructed to date, only five of which are occupied by full-time residents, including a 7,700-square-foot white mansion owned by John Mellencamp, who uses it as a retreat,” according to the piece.
The Wall Street Journal wasn’t the only national publication to publish a story about local real estate this week.
Hilton Head Island and Bluffton real estate got attention Thursday with the publication of a Washington Post article that recognizes the area for its “quiet luxury.”
The piece, written by Audrey Hoffer, highlights a Colleton River Plantation property currently on sale for nearly $10 million.
