A tree crashed through the Hilton Head Humane Association shelter last week in an area that houses 16 kennels.

Work this weekend by a tree company, shelter volunteers and staff got the shelter back in operation by Monday, according to director Franny Gerthoffer.

No dogs were injured, and they are all back in their spaces.

The large oak was found Thursday morning on the shelter at 10 Humane Way.

After the tree was removed by Jones Brothers Tree Surgeons, it was revealed that no major structural damage occurred, Gerthoffer said.

For a while, the shelter had to move the dogs to other areas. It put out a call for adoptions to find homes and said it could not accept more animals. But after work over the weekend, the shelter has returned to normal.

"We're quite excited about being back to work," Gerthoffer said.

Following the tree's topple, the shelter needs new sidewalks, fences and roof repairs. The association is awaiting word from its insurance company on coverage for the damage.
