New facilites are on the horizon for Callawassie Island.

Jeff Spencer, general manager at the Callawassie Club, said members recently voted to approve a new fitness center and another restaurant on the private residential island.

"These are the types of things the community wants," Spencer said. "We're keeping up with the needs and wants of the current community."

He said there was "significant turnout" for the vote on the facilites, with about 90 percent showing up and about 60 percent voting in favor of the fitness center and restaurant.

The new fitness center, expected to be constructed and opened in late 2016, will replace the current one, which will then become a meeting space for Callawassie Island clubs and events. The 4,000-square-foot facility will include standard exercise equipment, in addition to physical therapy services.

The River Club Grill project is likely to be in 2017, Spencer said.

"It will be more of a casual dining facility right on the Colleton River," he said. The menu is likely to include burgers and chicken entrees.
