Fahey: Costco proposed for shopping center bordering Sun City Hilton Head
A long-awaited day for many Lowcountry shoppers could finally be in sight.
A site plan for Okatie Crossing, a 280-acre development at the intersection of S.C. 170 and U.S. 278, reveals several tenants proposed for the center, including warehouse retailer Costco. Other proposed stores include Lowe's, Target, Kohl's, Marshalls, Dick's Sporting Goods and Field & Stream.
In addition to retailers, the site plan shows a Regal Cinemas movie theater proposed for the center of the massive development. The plan also reveals space for restaurants, junior anchors and small retailers, in addition to a Beaufort Memorial Hospital-owned parcel and several future outlot parcels.
The shopping center is in Jasper Country, right across the border from Bluffton.
Okatie Crossing, which is being developed by Knoxville, Tenn.-based Horne Properties, has been a long-discussed shopping center for the area bordering Sun City Hilton Head. It was originally proposed as a high-end fashion center but was later modified to feature more budget-conscious, big-box retailers.
In September, Horne development manager Jerry Presley said he hoped the center would be developed in 2016. Information about Okatie Crossing on Horne's website says the center is expected to be developed in late 2016 or early 2017.
A survey of 500 Beaufort County residents in September by The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette found that Costco was the No. 1 wished-for big-box retailer not currently in Beaufort County.
Additionally, department store Kohl's was the No. 3 requested retailer for the county.
