A regionally focused artisan tea company is now distributing locally.
Lisa Kling, owner of Bluffton Tea Company, said she got her business license last week to begin selling small batch, loose tea blends at local farmers markets and retail shops. Kling, a former resident of Savannah who now lives in Bluffton, recently returned to the area after spending several years as a global account manager for European airline Lufthansa.
"I want to see how it works," she said. Right now, she estimates she has 40 tea blends, which she claims is too many. "I'm testing right now to see what's going to work."
Kling obtained a specialty tea certification before launching Bluffton Tea Company. Right now, she said she is limiting her business to the Sunday farmers market at Palmetto Bluff and local stores such as The Roost in Old Town Bluffton's Promenade and Atmosphere in Beaufort. Some of the blends she creates are inspired by the region: the Bluffton Blend includes black tea, ginger and peach flavors and the Savannah Blend contains green tea and quince. Additionally, the label art for Bluffton Tea Company was designed by Bluffton artist Murray Sease.
"I'm trying to get regional input," Kling said. "I want to promote Southern tastes."
