Island rental car employee fights off two would-be robbers

An employee of a Hilton Head Island rental car company said he had to fight off two men Sunday as he tried to open the shop.

A deputy met with the Budget - Avis Rental Car employee who said he was approached by two men around 7:50 a.m. as he was opening the Hunter Road business, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The employee said one of the men grabbed him from behind.

The employee punched the man in the face, the report said, and then took a swing at the second assailant .

After he was able to push the men away, the employee drove to the Hilton Head Island Airport, where he knew a deputy was on duty, the report said.

The employee described one of the suspects as a African American man about 40 years old, around 5-feet-10-inches with a skinny build and wearing a blue sweatshirt, the report said.

The other suspect was also described as an approximately 40-year-old African American man around 6-feet tall with a skinny frame and a patchy beard. He was wearing a black sweatshirt.

The employee was unable to give further descriptions because the men had their hoods pulled over their faces, the report said.

However, he did say his attackers smelled of an "overwhelming presence of ... beer."

No fingerprints were found at the rental company, and nothing had been taken, the report said.
