Foodies are about to have another option for dining out in Port Royal.

The restaurant 1635 on the Avenue -- located, appropriately enough, at 1635 Paris Ave. in Port Royal -- is expected to open at the end of March, according to chef and owner Lorett Hayes. It will be in the building where Suwan Thai used to be.

Hayes described her cooking style as "sweet and heat," with fare including tomato basil pies, fish tacos and Cajun "confetti" slaw.

"It's traditional food with my own spin," she said.

Oh -- and she promises to deliver "shrimp and grits like nothing else." Interested yet?

This isn't Hayes' first restaurant venture. She has owned four others, including 1826 on the Green in Pendleton, and Liberty Hall Inn, a bed-and-breakfast also in Pendleton, which was featured in Southern Living magazine.

For Hayes, the importance of cooking begins with the presentation.

"It's like a package. That's the art of food," she said.

As the saying goes, "We eat first with our eyes."

Hayes and her husband, Randy, had a summer home on St. Helena Island. They looked around and settled on the Paris Avenue location for their next restaurant. With an apartment upstairs, Hayes said it was "a good fit for (them)."

They are "very busy" in getting the restaurant ready for its opening, which includes hanging pieces from Daniel Island-based artist Jonathan Green.

So if you're in the mood for steak and seafood -- even escargot, if that's your thing -- 1635 on the Avenue could be another fun place to check out this spring in Port Royal.
