Walmart grocery store still rumored for Hilton Head Island

A Walmart Neighborhood Market is coming to Bluffton, and another is rumored to be coming to Hilton Head Island, according to an October report.

Developers from Marietta, Ga.-based Crown Development Group want to build a 7-acre shopping center at Palmetto Bay and Target roads, according to a proposal submitted to the town last year.

A site plan found on the company's website in October shows a Walmart market in the space reserved for a grocery store. The plans have since been removed from the website.

Crown co-owner Michael Morris said in October the site plan was erroneously posted by an employee and did not reflect the company's plans for the center.

"It's our fault," Morris said. "We didn't know it was on the website. That was one of the 25 plans we have for the space."

The center's 47,000-square-foot grocery store would be the 13th major supermarket on the island.
