New Lady's Island Publix opens to big response
The new Lady's Island Publix opened its doors at 7 a.m. Thursday to a steady stream of people flowing throughout the day.
Bill Voegtle said he tried to stop by in the morning, but it was so busy he decided instead to swing by in the afternoon to pick up the vegetables and cheese he needed to make chicken cordon bleu for dinner.
He said the area's growth makes the larger store at 61 Lady's Island Drive necessary. Voegtle, who owns local Sport Clip franchises and keeps a close eye on market trends, said the community's growth may demand an even larger store soon.
The 54,000-square-foot store replaces the aging 37,000-square-foot space that Publix leases at the intersection of Sea Island Parkway and Sams Point Road. No plans have been announced for the building Publix is vacating.
The store manager said he was unable to comment Thursday, because of corporate policy, on how the grand opening day went.
Customers seemed pleased.
Martha Williams stopped by because she needed groceries -- and to take a peek at the store. She liked the more spacious parking lot and the opportunity to nibble on free samples.
"This one is humongous as compared to the one across the street," she said.
