Nissan Frontier Reliability: Better Than Ford And Chevy, But Not Toyota
If you are after a mid-size pickup that's affordable, capable and extremely customizable, then the Nissan Frontier should be high on your list. Introduced in 2022 to replace its long-running predecessor, the Frontier was far more advanced but retained an ease of usability and simple ruggedness that has helped it remain popular in this class.
While you can configure your Frontier to be rear or all-wheel drive, have a crew cab or extended cab and two bed lengths, every version comes with a 3.8-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic transmission. This combination delivers ample power and is smoother than many turbocharged four-cylinder rivals. It uses a rugged body-on-frame design which makes it ideal for tough work duties, but the ride is relatively hard, especially when unladen.
Thanks to those heavy-duty underpinnings, the Frontier is also capable of towing 7,150 pounds and has a payload capacity of 1,610 pounds. Both above average for the segment. Now in its fifth year, we decided to take a look at how it has done in the reliability stakes, and compare it to some of its key rivals as well. We used the predicted reliability scores as assessed by Consumer Reports (CR), as it is not funded or sponsored by any manufacturer and the data is collated from in-house testing and customer feedback.
Nissan Frontier Historical Reliability Data
Frontier Model Year | CR Reliability Verdict out of 100 |
2022 | 31 |
2023 | 38 |
2024 | 86 |
2025 | 65 |
2026 | 62 |
The Frontier suffered from some early production issues for the 2022 and 2023 model years, with the majority of complaints centering around wind noise, seals and squeaks from the interior. Electrical issues were also noted for both years, but Nissan was clearly hard at work behind the scenes, because the 2024 model year received the highest reliability score of all the model years so far.
The score tailed off a bit for the last two years, but most problems have been relatively minor and usually related to unresponsive infotainment systems and electrical glitches with the power doors and backup camera sensors. There is currently on e recall listed by the NHTSA for 2026, and it relates to issues with the door latches. Overall, the Frontier has had comparatively minor issues with its powertrain and suspension components, and reliability in these areas is a non-negotiable for a hardworking pickup truck.
Frontier Vs. Rivals:
Make and Model | Predicted Reliability Score out of 100 |
Toyota Tacoma | 74 |
Nissan Frontier | 62 |
Honda Ridgeline | 57 |
Ford Ranger | 43 |
Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon | 29 |
To put things into perspective, it's always a good idea to look at where the Frontier's rivals have achieved. While the Nissan may be getting on in years and rivals like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevy Colorado dominate the sales charts, the Frontier remains a very capable offering that is second only to the Tacoma in the predicted reliability rankings. The Toyota pickup did very well for 2026, and while it isn't necessarily a class-leader in any one category, the Tacoma's overall capability and proven reliability has helped make it the undisputed sales leader in the mid-size pickup segment.
The Honda Ridgeline has a similar share of the market compared to the Frontier, but its unibody design is geared more towards comfort, and it is not quite as capable off road, or when it comes to maximum towing capacity. It's also slightly less reliable overall but still manages a solid 57/100 and is a popular option with buyers that prioritize daily-driver comfort.
The Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado are also body-on-frame trucks and both are very popular. They come in a variety of trims and configurations, but unfortunately neither one has managed to deliver when it comes to longer term reliability. The Colorado, in particular, has struggled to overcome several issues since its redesign in 2023, and the mechanically identical GMC Canyon also got the same bottom of the class score.
The Nissan Frontier has overcome a rocky start in terms of reliability to become one of the top performers in its class. Backed by a no-nonsense V6 engine, reliable underpinnings and an impressive array of customization options, it is a great buy, new or used. But we'd avoid the earliest model years just to be safe.
