Back from the dead? Demolished Hilton Head hotel site gets a second chance at life
A new chapter is unfurling at the site of the former Beachwalk Hotel.
The abandoned hotel was demolished in 2023, but architects have submitted plans to construct a new hotel in its place.
Beachwalk Hilton Head LLC is proposing a new 41-unit, five-story hotel on the property at 40 Waterside Drive near Coligny Beach.
Each unit will have three to four bedrooms, with an average of 1,700 square feet per unit.
Amenities will include a swimming pool with a shaded pavilion, grilling areas, and conference rooms.
The Town of Hilton Head Design Review Board reviewed plans for the new hotel at a Feb. 11 meeting. The project was approved with conditions.
Jason Broene of Court Atkins Group, who submitted the design documents to the town, could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
What happened to the Beachwalk hotel?
According to previous Island Packet reporting, the old Beachwalk Hotel was originally constructed in 1989 as a Holiday Inn Express. It was turned to a condominium site in 2006.
When the recession hit in 2008, several condo owners stopped paying their mortgages and were forced into foreclosure. The property sat abandoned for more than a decade. According to town records, the vacant hotel was demolished in 2023.
Before it was demolished, people without anywhere else to sleep were occasionally found curled up in sleeping bags on the property.
