Last locally-owned paint shop on Hilton Head to close

Correction 12/15/2025: This story has been updated to clarify that the property will become an outdoor living store, not an Ace Hardware.

Hilton Head’s last locally-owned paint store will close its doors Monday.

Hilton Head Glidden, located on New Orleans Road, is closing after nearly 40 years in business.

Owner David Harter is selling the property to one of the owners of the Ace Hardware on Hilton Head. Closing papers will be signed Monday, Harter told The Island Packet.

Harter, who came to Hilton Head with his wife Jeannie in 1979, is locally known for his environmental advocacy and charitable work.

The store received the Small Business of the Year award by the Hilton Head-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce in 1991.

David Harter, owner of Hilton Head Glidden, said he will be closing his longstanding paint shop Monday after nearly 40 years in business. The owner of the Ace Hardware on Hilton Head is purchasing the property for a new outdoor living store.

Beaufort Glidden will continue to stay open for the “foreseeable future,” Harter said.

Jordan Garmon, General Manager for the Ace Hardware on Hilton Head, told The Packet that the property will become an outdoor living store and will not be affiliated with Ace Hardware.
