A Hilton Head deli and ice cream shop that closed on New Year’s Eve has reopened in a renovated new location.

Gr8 Bites is now serving customers in Northridge Plaza. It made the move less than 1 1/2 miles east from Main Street Village after its lease was not renewed.

Owners Beth and Greg Elmquist said they considered a move to Bluffton but decided to stay mid-island on Hilton Head because that’s where they have built a customer base.

The Elmquists launched Gr8 Bites in late 2020, when they purchased an existing restaurant and changed the name and menu. Chef Greg Elmquist previously worked at Chart House on Hilton Head and Sigler’s in Bluffton.

To minimize the time Gr8 Bites would be closed, they kept the first location open while they did renovations.

“We got our new space in November, and we were working while being open at Main Street,” Beth Elmquist explained.

The Northridge Plaza location previously was home to a sushi restaurant, but the Elmquists made the space their own.

“We put in a new floor. We painted. We redid the kitchen floor,” said Beth Elmquist. “There was bar in there, and we changed it to a countertop.”

The new location is larger and decorated in a warmer palate, with a row of light brown booths next to a wall of windows that the previous tenant had covered up. The result is a homey and calming atmosphere. A table at the back will seat eight for the golfing groups and Bible study groups that regularly meet there.

Aside from the cosmetic changes, diners don’t have to worry about missing any of their favorites.

“Same menu. All the same prices,” said Greg Elmquist.

Gr8 Bites serves breakfast all day. The menu also includes a broad range of soups, sandwiches and burgers, salads, panini and Nathan’s hot dogs.
