East Argent and Sun City, SC, residents will have to wait a year longer for a nearby YMCA

Residents of Hardeeville’s ambitious East Argent development are still getting a YMCA, just one year later than planned after construction delays pushed its opening back to the end of 2024.

The James Fisher Memorial Foundation YMCA was originally planned to begin construction this month. However, after what a representative for the Beaufort-Jasper YMCA described as “permitting issues” breaking ground was postponed to next December.

It’s estimated that construction will take a year to complete putting a potential opening somewhere in late 2024. Until then, the YMCA in Port Royal will remain the sole facility in the area without having to go across state lines to Savannah.

An aquatics center, fitness areas, locker rooms, a Child Watch/Adventure Zone play area, group exercise space and a café are all planned amenities for the YMCA which will be located west of Argent Boulevard and north of U.S. 278, near the northern side of Sun City

The East Argent project was announced in 2017 and touted as the largest planned development in Hardeeville history. The development has plans to add nearly 10,000 homes and apartments, 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space and 1,330 acres of passive and recreational park space.

According to previous reporting by the Island Packet, if all of the proposed homes are built, the population of the city could see a drastic increase from about 9,000 residents to more than 20,000 by 2030. Completion of the development is expected to take 15-20 years, according to Hardeeville Mayor, Harry Williams.
