‘Landmark’ Hilton Head produce stand makes a comeback. Here’s where it’s located

After a brief hiatus, a Lowcountry landmark has returned — this time in a different spot.

Carolina Seafood, the well-known produce stand that’s been serving locals and tourists since 1980 at the approach to the Hilton Head bridges, made an official comeback with the opening of a new Hilton Head location on Friday.

Customers can find a familiar selection of seafood and produce alongside South Forest Beach Drive near the Coligny Circle roundabout. The new location is open Friday-Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Carolina Seafood’s return comes only weeks after a Beaufort County judge evicted the business from its historic location alongside U.S. 278 in August, citing a breach of its leasing contract. Wesley Campbell, the owner of the stand since 1980, vacated the property by Sept. 9.

But the eviction wouldn’t be the end of Carolina Seafood, Campbell previously told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette at the time.

Less than two weeks later, Campbell merged his business with a preexisting stand run by his nephew, continuing Carolina Seafood’s decades-long run.

Efforts to reach Campbell for comment were unsuccessful.

This new stand has more accessibility. Standing no more than 10 feet from the bustling U.S. 278, the former location was riddled with parking difficulties and inundated with noise.

Now, customers can enjoy a much more relaxed shopping experience: stopping by the stand during their walk to Coligny Beach, taking in the colorful sights of fresh Lowcountry produce, even having a chat with Campbell and staff, who have become staples of the Hilton Head community.

The new location isn’t hard to find, either — just look for the stand’s signature bright red umbrellas.
