Final 2 restaurants in fried chicken championship. Which is best in Beaufort Co.?

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette

After more than 19,000 votes in the semifinals, two restaurants are left standing in the competition to name Beaufort County’s best fried chicken.

The contest that started with 33 contenders is shaping up to be North of Broad landmark vs. South of Broad landmark in the final vote.

We are wiping the slate clean and asking readers to choose between Maryland Fried Chicken in Beaufort and Cahill’s Chicken Kitchen in Bluffton in the final round.

Please note the only prize is bragging rights; the biggest winners are those of us who get to eat at these wonderful restaurants.

North of Broad

Maryland Fried Chicken’s menu is full of the classic choices you’d expect: Chicken buckets, dinners with sides, strips, nuggets and sandwiches. A three-piece dinner (or five wings) with two sides and two rolls comes in just under $10 before drink and tax. Side options include mac and cheese bites, fried okra, hushpuppies or a jalapeno. There’s also mashed potatoes, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, macaroni salad and green beans.

South of Broad

Cahill’s Chicken Kitchen’s menu is extensive and includes breakfast, salads, sandwiches and burgers, but what we are focusing on is the fried chicken. The Chicken Wagon Meal includes fried chicken with three sides for $17.99, and Chicken ‘n Waffles ranges from $11.99 to $14.99 depending on whether you prefer dark, white, a combo or boneless chicken. Sides include green beans, black-eyed peas, okra and tomatoes, creamed corn, butter beans, broccoli casserole, stewed cabbage, collards, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, sweet potato souffle, rice and gravy, grits, potato roasties, french fries, coleslaw, fruit salad, avocado and bean salad, pickled beets, garden salad, sliced tomatoes, or tomato and cucumber salad.
