10 acres of pickleball courts and restaurant proposed for site along SC 170 in Bluffton

A developer has proposed a large pickleball facility with its own clubhouse and restaurant off S.C. 170 in Bluffton.

The Lowcountry Pickleball Club would consist of six indoor courts, six covered outdoor courts and six uncovered outdoor courts.

It would be located on 10.25 acres at 60 Estate Drive. The property encompasses three existing lots within the Palmetto Pointe Business Park. They would be consolidated into one lot as part of the project, according to plans filed with the Town of Bluffton.

The plans submitted by Richard Maggin of Palmetto Land Associates will be considered at a town Planning Commission meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Town Hall.

The proposed site plan includes 222 parking spaces for the 13,000-square-foot restaurant, 30,000-square-foot club and courts.

The application references possible future buildings but does not offer specifics. It also does not give details about the type of restaurant planned.

Pickleball is rising in popularity. The sport mixes elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis into one game.

There are handful of pickleball courts around Beaufort County, but most of them are private and only a few are open to the public.

In September of last year, Beaufort County opened its first public pickleball courts.

As of now there three places to find public courts, two courts at Southside Park in Beaufort, two at Shell Point Park in Port Royal and two at the Bluffton Recreation Center.
