Forget crossing the bridge for mini golf. Here’s the plan for Bluffton’s first course

A miniature golf course is in the works off Buckwalter Parkway.

Lighthouse Lagoon would be located on approximately one acre between Publix and Station 300 in Buckwalter Place, according to plans submitted to the town of Bluffton. The land bordered on one side by Innovation Drive is vacant.

Initial plans for the course show 18 holes meandering across the property, with a roughly 1,300-square-foot building housing concessions and restrooms next to an 840-square-foot pavilion for kids’ birthday parties and other types of gatherings.

If all goes well, said developer and business owner Billy Hubbard, of Bluffton’s Coastal Realty Group, the attraction could open as soon as this summer.

Once permits are approved, construction should take about 90 days, he said.

The course is being designed to have a Lowcountry theme with water features, and the first nine holes are designated as wheelchair accessible.

Hubbard said the plans are to offer family-friendly entertainment with “something for everyone,” including the possibility of weekly tournaments for adults and a senior day.

“We think everybody fits because all ages can play this game,” he said.

The plans still have a few hurdles to cross before construction can begin.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the town’s Development Review Committee raised questions about the parking lot arrangement and requested more specific information about wheelchair accessibility and about the trees that will be planted. If those questions can be addressed quickly, the plan may be presented to the full Planning Commission at its March meeting.
