Hilton Head’s House of Jerky adds 75 flavors of gourmet popcorn at new location
Hilton Head’s House of Jerky has a new, larger home, and that extra space meant there was room to add a completely different snack experience to the lineup.
Enter: House of Popcorn.
The business recently moved from one part of Coligny Plaza to another, taking over the space left vacant in November when Sweet Carolina Cupcakes moved into the Village at Wexford.
Jay Elliot, who purchased the Hilton Head House of Jerky three years ago, said renovations turned the former bakery next to Piggly Wiggly into a more rustic-looking shop appropriate for showcasing about 60 varieties of jerky. The flavors range from the traditional teriyaki beef and turkey to the more exotic, like python, alligator and kangaroo.
The jerky, which has no nitrates or preservatives, can be purchased only from one of the House of Jerky locations or their own websites.
“It has like a cult following,” Elliot said, adding that he also sets up a House of Jerky booth at local festivals.
In addition to jerky, the shop sells several varieties of local honey, flavored pecans and other gourmet snacks. The newest addition is a lineup of 75 flavors of gourmet popcorn.
The popcorn is popped in Summerville and falls into three general categories. There’s “savory” (think Flamin’ Hot Cheetos), “candy” (like blueberry or caramel), and “premium” (Oreo cheesecake or s’mores, anyone?) Prices range from $8 a bag to $16 depending on the size and flavor.
“It’s very colorful in here,” Elliot said.
As for the future, he’s hoping to grow the business to include hotel service and wedding-related favors.
