Hilton Head ‘speakeasy’ Whiskey Room is closed. Here are the plans for the vacant space

Whiskey Room, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar on Hilton Head’s south end, closed its doors for good on Tuesday.

A statement released by owner SERG Group said the coronavirus pandemic was behind the decision to close.

“In the post COVID-19 environment, remaining open wasn’t a viable option due to the Whiskey Room’s limited footprint and no outdoor dining capability,” Alan Wolf, SERG Group president and partner, said in the statement. “It was an amazing concept and something unique to the island but was just not sustainable in these current times.”

Whiskey Room opened in January 2019 in Park Plaza and was bought by SERG, the largest hospitality group on the Hilton Head, in April of that year.

Its entrance, which set the tone for the Prohibition atmosphere, was through a bookcase in Charbar Co. Burgers and Sushi next door.

The space previously occupied by the bar will be renovated and become part of Charbar, SERG’s news release said.

“Due in large part to the success of our sushi program at Charbar, we wanted to be able to accommodate more seating and additional take-out options,” said Tim Nelson, Charbar managing partner.

Charbar will remain open during renovations. The timeline for renovations to be complete was not available.
