Stein Mart locations in Bluffton, Hilton Head closing. Here’s what customers can expect
Stein Mart, which has stores on Hilton Head and in Bluffton, announced last week that it would be closing all 279 of its stores nationwide.
The retailer filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on Wednesday and said going out of business sales would start immediately at all of its locations.
A banner on Stein Mart’s website offered customers up to 30% off storewide in each of its locations.
Stein Mart sells clothing, shoes and accessories, as well as home decor items and gifts.
Earlier this year, the Jacksonville, Florida-based Stein Mart entered into a merger agreement with equity firm Kingswood Capital Management. However, that deal fell apart in April “as a result of uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the retailer said in a news release at the time.
Spokeswoman Linda Tasseff told the Jacksonville TV station News4Jax that she anticipates all stores would be completely closed by late 2020, but closing dates will vary by store.
The stores’ closing will leave two large vacancies in Beaufort County shopping centers.
Hilton Head’s Stein Mart, located in Sea Turtle Marketplace, remained open during extensive work turning the aging Pineland Station mall into the current shopping center between 2015 and 2018. Construction stalled several times over that period, and in May 2019 the center’s owner, WD-I Associates, filed for bankruptcy.
In March, Sea Turtle Marketplace was sold to BOKF, an Oklahoma-based real estate holding company.
Bluffton’s Stein Mart is one of the anchors with Kroger in Belfair Towne Village on U.S. 278. It is the only large chain retailer offering clothing and home decor in that part of the town.
Details about the closing customers may want to keep in mind
- Stein Mart said new merchandise would be arriving in stores to be sold during the closing.
- Going-out-of-business markdowns are not currently available for online purchases.
- All sales are final.
- Gift cards and loyalty rewards will be accepted for a limited time.
- Store fixtures, furniture and equipment will also be sold at discounted prices.
