Hilton Head stables reopening for trail rides with a few changes because of coronavirus
Lawton Stables, a beloved destination for Hilton Head Island visitors and residents alike, plans to begin the reopening process next week.
Group trail rides start on Monday, June 29, but only for those who have a reservation.
“The first week is almost sold out already, and we are starting to see a lot of people book for July,” said office manager Kayla King. She said reservations are being made as far out as September.
The business, which has operated in Sea Pines Resort for 52 years, has been closed since mid-March, when social distancing orders were put in place because of coronavirus.
Lawton Stables has around 45 trail horses, King said. This week employees have been taking the horses on short rides to make sure they are in shape before the reopening.
“They’ve been on vacation,” King said of the horses, “a well-deserved vacation.”
For at least the first week, only six riders at a time will be part of each trail ride in order to maintain social distancing. Group sizes will gradually increase over time.
Masks will be suggested but not required for riders because they will be in the open air. All stable employees will be wearing masks.
Disinfecting spray will be used on helmets and saddles between rides.
Lawton Stables’ trail rides last about an hour and go through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. No previous riding experience is necessary, but riders must be at least 8 years old. There also is a 240-pound weight limit for riders.
Prices vary based on the time of year, but a trail ride between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend is $75 per person.
Lawton Stables’ small animal farm will not be open for visitors right away, and pony rides for young children will not be available until mid-July.
