Popular Hilton Head pizza restaurant closing, but just temporarily, owner says

Fat Baby’s Pizza announced on Facebook that the restaurant would be closing for the summer.

“The rumors have already begun to permeate the ether. Please consider the source: We ARE NOT shuttering the restaurant. We ARE NOT going out of business. Relax, I promise. However, we ARE taking the summer off,” the May 25 post reads.

Pete Bernstein, owner since 2006 of the restaurant on Hilton Head’s south end at 1034 William Hilton Parkway near Arrow Road, said in a Facebook message that he did not want to comment on the temporary closing.

“We find ourselves in the very fortunate position to be able to close for the summer. We’re lucky enough to have the resources to take care of our staff while not exposing them to any health-related risks,” reads the post on the restaurant’s Facebook page that also thanks patrons for their support over the years.

The restaurant is expected to reopen after Labor Day.

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster closed restaurant dining rooms, limiting them to take-out and delivery, in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic. They were allowed to reopen in May with restrictions on capacity and social-distancing measures.
