Golden Corral turned spa? Recently closed Bluffton location undergoes major renovation

The building that used to house Golden Corral in Bluffton will soon be home to a buffet of a different sort, and this one has nothing to do with all-you-can-eat fried chicken or a chocolate fountain.

Once renovations are complete, a new luxury spa will offer an extensive menu of therapies and services, including facials, massages and manicures. It also will have a salt room and a blow dry bar. The new owners say there could be up to 20 treatment rooms.

Whisper Creek Day Spa is scheduled to open at the end of the year, though the timing could be delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, said Bob Wolfe, who now owns the building with his wife, Jennifer.

“This is a daunting time,” Bob Wolfe said. “We want to make sure we have wellness and hygiene in mind.”

The couple have been splitting time between Cincinnati and Hilton Head while planning to move into Colleton River Plantation.

Bob Wolfe said he thinks the wide variety of services that will be offered under one roof at Whisper Creek Day Spa will make their business stand out.

The building, located at 1196 Fording Island Road across the parking lot from Wild Wing Cafe, is being gutted to make way for new construction.

Bob Wolfe said the site, centrally located for the Bluffton area and still within an easy drive of Hilton Head on U.S. 278, was a big draw.

“What we liked about it was the building itself,” he said. The 2.5-acre property includes 159 parking spots around the roughly 12,000-square-foot building.

Golden Corral restaurant closed for good in March, and documents filed with the Beaufort County Register of Deeds show the property was sold for $1.64 million on April 9.

David Dulaney of Gee Brothers and Dulaney LLC, said in an emailed statement that his business will continue to operate the Golden Corral franchise in Beaufort, at 122 Robert Smalls Parkway.

“We would like to thank all our friends and family in Bluffton for 16 years of their support,” the statement reads. “We hope that they will come visit us in Beaufort. Our catering operation will still continue to be able to serve much of the Bluffton area including Sun City.”
