Department stores and outlets in Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head reopening this week

Major department stores and outlet malls in Beaufort, Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island are set to reopen this week after closing for the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tanger Outlet malls located on U.S. 278 in Bluffton have reopened and are back to normal hours, according to the outlet website. Tanger announced the reopening with signs on Bluffton Parkway Sunday.

Belk, located on S.C. 170 in Beaufort and in Shelter Cove Towne Centre on the island, will reopen at noon on Friday and be open special hours through the weekend for in-person shopping, according to the stores’ websites.

The announcements come as S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster has lifted restrictions on certain retail stores, allowing those store managers to make the decision on whether to open.

“We believe that we can do this, if compliance remains at the high level that it has been, we can do this without endangering the population,” McMaster said at an April 20 news conference.

Under the governor’s order, department stores can reopen, along with other retail businesses deemed “nonessential” such as sporting goods stores, book, music, shoe and craft stores, jewelry stores, floral shops and other luggage and leather goods stores.

The Tanger Outlets website encouraged shoppers to check with individual retailers for more specific hours. While the mall is open, not all store managers may choose to reopen at the same time. The outlet mall company’s headquarters are in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Belk, one of the only department stores on the island, is a regular destination for formal wear, shoes and children’s’ clothing. The department store chain is headquartered in Charlotte.
