Plans for second Costco in works just outside Charleston

Costco Wholesale Club has submitted plans for a second location in the Charleston area while Beaufort and Jasper county residents await news on one planned in their region.

The Post and Courier reported Thursday that the company is planning a 154,000-square-foot sore in northern Mount Pleasant.

The discount retailer purchased land from Carolina Park Development Corp. last fall, the article states.

Town of Mount Pleasant staff told the newspaper that site work could start for the store later this year.

Costco’s first location in the Charleston area opened in 2001 in West Ashley.

Plans for a Costco in Hardeeville at the intersection of U.S. 278 and S.C. 170 were first released to the public in 2015.

The store, along with other box stores such as Kohl’s, Lowes and Marshalls appeared on Horne Properties’ site plans for the 300-acre property.

Doug Horne, president of the development company, said Thursday that talks with Costco continue. He said he was unable to give a timeline for the development, though.

The development was originally planned for late 2016 and then early 2017.
