First Lidl, now Aldi: German discount grocers eye Lowcountry locations

Months after a German-owned grocery store announced plans for stores in Bluffton and Hilton Head, another German discount grocer looks to be coming to the area.

The Savannah Morning News reports Aldi has plans to open a 19,054-square-foot facility on a 2.4-acre lot at the corner of Maxwell Drive and Trader’s Way in Pooler. Currently, the closest Aldi to the Hiton Head-Beaufort market is in Summerville., north of Charleston.

A Lidl is also planned for Pooler. The Island Packet reported in June that Lidl, a competitor of Aldi, submitted preliminary plans to the town of Bluffton for a store at Buckwalter Place and a pre-application and site plan for another store on Hilton Head.
