Making phone calls in Southern Hardeeville will soon become more reliable for residents and those traveling to Savannah.

The city of Hardeeville is breaking ground this month on a new communications tower located off of U.S. 17. The project is expected to complete in March of next year.

The tower will be built in partnership with Jasper County and Motorola, the Schaumburg, Illinois-based telecommunications company, and will provide more coverage for emergency communications in the southern part of Hardeville, the city said in a press release.

While the tower’s primary focus will be to improve emergency service coverage, it will also be able to hold up to four cellular carriers. The tower will provide a radius of about 10 miles of new coverage closing key gaps in the area, the press release said.

“This tower is essential to provide safety and emergency responses when people need assistance,‘‘ the city said in the release. “Whether it’s personal or business, less dropped calls within our boundaries is an important upgrade.”
