Hilton Head’s Beach House renovation, including Tiki Hut, fully opened. Here’s a look inside

For months, tourists and islanders walking to Coligny Beach have seen construction fences, men in hard hats and heavy equipment peaking out above green chain-link fence on the Beach House Resort property.

On May 30, workers put the final touches on the redesigned resort pool and a new outdoor events pavilion called The Dunes. The pool is set to open May 31, according to general manager Jay Wiendl. He said a couple is scheduled to get married on the beach with a reception at The Dunes this weekend.

The space looks different after $13 million in renovations.

“Everything’s brand new,” bartender Mike Hays said. “The salt air, being on an ocean, deteriorates everything over time. Now with the renovation everything is ready to go.”

Hays said they’re still keeping their old charm. There are coaster-sized drink holders made from the former Tiki Hut roof, the restaurant is still using its signature lunch boxes and much of the staff is the same. For Hays, it’ll be his fifth season with Tiki Hut, which first opened in 1977.

“Make sure the customers are happy. That’s the most important thing,” Hays said, explaining it’s much easier to hear customers since the live music isn’t behind the bar and because the Tiki Hut is increasing their staff to accommodate the bigger space.
