Become active part of your community by simply going to the library
When was the last time you visited your public library? If it's been a while, you might be surprised at all the new things that are offered. February is Library Lovers Month. So why should you love your local library? Here are some reasons:
1. The obvious reason: Books. Books are available for babies through seniors. We have best-sellers, nonfiction classics, you name it. If you can't find it on our shelves, we can find what you want at one of our SC LENDS libraries. This gives you access to more materials than ever before. We also offer e-books through our vendor, 3M. You can read these books on your computer or e-reader just like the hard copies. The only difference is, they will disappear once your checkout period is finished. We also have downloadable books on CD and playaways.
2. DVDs: You can find classics (how long has it been since you watched "Cat on A Hot Tin Roof" or "Rebel Without a Cause?"), TV series, current hits and educational films. Want to watch a yoga session or learn how to meditate?
3. Internet and computer access: Our libraries have ample computers for public use. You can access the Internet or use programs like Word. If you have your own device, we also offer Wi-Fi.
4. Resource center: We are a source for those seeking knowledge on anything from starting a small business, learning about medical issues, car repair, consumer information, gardening and genealogy (to name a few). Not only do we have the resources, but we have librarians you'll be able to ask for tips on where to start your search and how to find materials. Don't hesitate to ask. Librarians are a wonderful resource.
5. Storytimes and children's activities: Children's librarians have evolved with the times and storytime is likely to involve audience participation. A wide range of activities are available for youth such as book clubs, craft activities, puzzles, Lego fun and much more. There are even programs available for ages 0-3.
6. Adult programs: A wide variety of programs are available, including programs on movies, books, computers, health and wellness, civic literacy, and many other art/hobby and enrichment topics. Pick up a copy of "Free stuff to do" at the library or check our website, www.beaufortcountylibrary.org, for a listing of events.
Lastly, libraries are places where people come to know themselves and their communities. Robert Putnam, a professor at Harvard University and well-known author and political scientist, said: "People may go to the library looking mainly for information, but they find each other there." New moms connect at baby storytimes. Elderly people, often facing difficult life transitions, attend events and find they make new friends. Teenagers meet up in library teen spaces after school, and readers discuss current events. In libraries, community-building connections are happening all the time.
Mary Jo Berkes is the branch manager of the Hilton Head Island library.
