Beaufort County teens can compete in library video contest

Who needs $150? Everyone, right? If you are 13 to 18 years old, you have a chance to win this amount and, at the same time, win $50 for your local library.

The Teen Video Challenge, sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, is the way. Each year, teens across the United States create 30- to 90-second videos that promote public libraries and reading. The overall summer reading theme is "Superheroes." The teen theme for summer reading 2015 is "Unmask!," and this is also the inspiration for your submission.

The video must be generic because it could be used in many libraries participating in the summer reading program. It also needs to be directed at all ages, because everyone participates in summer reading, right? The winning video will excel in creativity; it will deliver a clear message of how important reading during the summer is for everyone and be motivating. Do you think you can do this? Then get down to the closest public library and find the youth services manager. He or she is the one to see.

Don't have a camera? We do. We will help you as much as we can. Most of our libraries in Beaufort County have quiet places where you can film your award-winning video. Many of us have puppets and other props you could use, and if we don't have what you need, we know who to ask and where to look. Can you see a chance for some funny "planking" opportunities?

If you cannot get to the library, give us a call and maybe we can work with your teacher and provide resources at your school for the project. Submissions should be uploaded by March 9. Check out more information at http://www.statelibrary.sc.gov. Our state library strongly supports our summer reading efforts. Information can also be accessed at the Collaborative Summer Library Program website at http://www.cslpreads.org.

While we are on the subject of teens, our new programming guide is due to be out soon. In January, teens will have the opportunity to get involved at every branch of our library system. You will see activities in the guide such as scavenger hunts, trivia games, art projects and community service projects. We will meet to discuss and plan for things teens would like to do. We want your input, so come in and give it to us.

December is a busy month for the library system. It is good to know that all ages will enjoy the many programs we have planned. Bluffton will host a "special" visitor. The Hilton Head Island library will have a crafting night. Come make decorations to help decorate the library, as well as some to take home. On another evening, teens can make crafts for gifts and decorating. The Beaufort library will be open the evening of Night on the Town with refreshments and a craft for parents to make with their children. St. Helena Island is hosting a Christmas sweater decorating session. Bring your own sweater and they will supply the "ugly." St. Helena's "Gullah Night on the Town" is another opportunity to get together with your friends and family in December. Beaufort will have a gingerbread house decorating session, and the "Beaufort Railroaders" train display will be open from Dec. 16 through 20.

Contact your local branch for a complete list of programs in December for each branch. Be aware that some of these sessions require registration. Check out our website at www.beaufortcountylibrary.org for detailed information.

Kathleen McTeer is the children's manager at Beaufort library.
