$2.7M Daufuskie beachside home is runner up in national contest. Here’s a peek inside

A Daufuskie Island mansion is the runner up for the Wall Street Journal’s House of the Year, the newspaper announced Thursday.

The beachfront home at 3 Ocean Watch in Haig Point is described as an English-style home and has a traditional look. Photos of the home were first published in the newspaper in July.

The winner of the annual contest, in which readers cast votes for their favorites featured by the newspaper, is a contemporary waterfront home in Oahu, Hawaii.

The Daufuskie home was built in the mid-2000s as a retirement home for Ursula Rigg and the late John Rigg, a couple from England who wanted a home that “would accommodate their blended family and collection of English antiques,” the Wall Street Journal wrote in an article published on its website Thursday and expected to be in Friday’s print edition.

The newspaper says the home was positioned on the lot in such a way to preserve the centuries-old oak trees on the property.

John Rigg passed away in 2017, and Ursula Rigg still lives in the home, the newspaper reported.

The house is currently listed for sale for $2.775 million by Tom Beavor with Premier Properties by Haig Point.

The 5,697-square-foot home has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and two half-baths across its four stories. Construction on the island, which can be reached only by boat, took two years.

Large windows offer views of the Calibogue Sound, and one of the two long balconies looking toward the water has a screened dining area.

Cabinetry in the large kitchen “was sourced from a 200-year-old barn,” the Wall Street Journal article states. Other custom touches throughout the home include a marble-and-teak bar modeled after an English pub and a bedroom on the top floor designed to look like the interior of a ship with bunk-beds for the Riggs’ grandchildren.

A backyard pool is directly on the beach. The home also has a cabana with “changing tents” and a bathroom.
