Bar at Hilton Head’s Black Marlin to be torn down for new boat-shaped build

The charming octagonal bar in the patio of the Black Marlin Bayside Grill may see the end of its days soon. Owners submitted plans for its demolition along with designs for a new rectangular bar that will feature more seating and a fishing boat-like design.

The Black Marlin Hurricane Bar is getting a facelift, according to documents submitted to the Town of Hilton Head Design Review Board.

The charming octagonal structure that currently serves as the outdoor bar will be demolished. A new rectangular bar will be built in its place, allowing space for more seating with waterfront views.

The bar’s design takes heavy inspiration from the aesthetics of classic fishing boats, with wood lap siding and an epoxy-coated wood countertop. The bar’s roof will be partially supported by two timber columns that will stretch in a “V” shape, resembling the outriggers of a fishing boat.

It’s unclear when the outdoor bar is expected to close for renovations. Representatives of SERG Group could not be reached for comment in time for publication.

The Black Marlin Bayside Grill, located in Palmetto Bay Marina, first opened in 2006. The restaurant’s interior underwent extensive renovations in 2023, creating an open-concept dining room, a teak wood bar and more.
