Future jazz musicians get pick of 3 summer programs on Hilton Head

The Junior Jazz Foundation is sponsoring three summer jazz programs on Hilton Head Island in July.

Hilton Head Jazz Camp (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11-16) is designed for intermediate to advanced middle and high school students ages 14-20. With a combination of large big bands, small combos, theory, improv, elective courses, jam sessions, masterclasses and performances under the leadership of 14 full-time professional faculty and visiting artist-in-residence, this camp is intended for aspiring jazz students. In addition to accepting traditional band instruments, limited openings are available for a new vocal jazz and jazz strings program. Scholarships are available for qualified students sponsored by the Junior Jazz Foundation. The Hilton Head Jazz Camp is on the campus of Hilton Head Christian Academy with lodging available for out-of-town high school students. The camp concludes with a finale concert at 2 p.m. July 16 at the Seahawk Cultural Center. Registration is open until June 30 at hhjazzcamp.eventbrite.com.

The Hilton Head Jazz Clinic (from 1 to 4 p.m. July 5-8) is for students ages 10-14 and is a combination of private lessons, small combos, with instruction in theory/improv geared toward beginning students beginning their journey into jazz and improvisation. The Hilton Head Jazz Guitar Institute (from 1 to 4 p.m. or 5 to 8 p.m. July 5-8) is led by Jackson Evans of Savannah. It is intended for guitarists who want to learn to to play jazz. Both the jazz clinic and camp include a trip to Savannah and joint performance on July 8.
