Mourners prayed for peace at a Savannah funeral service. Then a child was shot
A shooting at a Savannah funeral service ended in life-threatening injuries for the 12-year-old boy.
Savannah police responded to a call at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, WSAV reported, and police continued to investigate the shooting Saturday evening.
The injured boy was the only person who was shot. He was transported to a hospital for treatment, according to Savannah police.
The shooting occurred at Bonaventure Funeral after a funeral service. Rev. Arleen Fuller said she had just finished praying for peace when she heard gunshots, the Savannah Morning News reported.
“I was doing the eulogy and was talking about the young people about the crime and the violence,” Fuller said. “And I was asking them to stop and to not do retaliation…. Next thing you know we heard pop, pop, pop.”
The funeral service was for Ricky Jerome Boyd, Savannah Morning News reported. Boyd, a 20-year-old murder suspect, was killed by police on Jan. 23 when he pointed a BB gun at officers, according to reports.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting of Boyd.
