Deck demolition begins at Hilton Head’s Heron Street ‘mini hotel’

Workers on Saturday began demolition work on the large deck connecting the two rental properties at 3 and 5 Heron Street in North Forest Beach, dubbed by critics as a mini-hotel, on Saturday.

The deck is being removed after the town's Board of Zoning Appeals reversed a waiver that allowed the two homes to be connected in August.

The waiver allowed the homes to violate setback and buffer requirements, and had never been granted in a single family residential district before.

At the last Town Council meeting, a set of Land Management Ordinance amendments were approved that will prevent the waiver from happening in single family residential areas again.

Don Freeman, of Bradgon Builders, said the deck would be fully removed by Tuesday at the latest.
