Meryl Streep Chooses Not to Attend Met Gala 2026: Not Her 'Scene'
While the 2026 Met Gala will feature a slew of Hollywood A-listers, Meryl Streep has decided to skip fashion’s biggest night following her whirlwind press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
“Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended,” Streep’s rep told People on Monday, May 4, ahead of the iconic fundraiser. “While she appreciates Vogue, Anna [Wintour], and her incredible imagination and stamina-it has never quite been her scene.”
Streep, 76, was one of many stars fans were looking forward to seeing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday to see how they would be interpreting this year’s “Costume Art” theme and the event’s subsequent “Fashion is Art” dress code.
While Streep won’t be gracing the Met Gala, she has walked a long list of red carpets over the past few months in support of the premiere of the long-awaited The Devil Wears Prada 2.
In the movie, which hit theaters on Friday, May 1, Streep reprised her role as the iconic and ruthless magazine editor-in-chief Miranda. The film takes place years after the events of 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada - but have no fear, Miranda is still in charge of Runway magazine in New York City.
Her former assistant Andrea (Anne Hathaway), however, worked her way up as a columnist at a newspaper before finding herself suddenly laid off and back working for Miranda once again. Runway’s fashion guru Nigel (Stanley Tucci) is still at the magazine, while Emily (Emily Blunt) has crossed over to the world of designing.
There is even a Met Gala-style scene that can’t be missed in the film with Streep’s Miranda in a bold red taffeta gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and 3D collar titled over her left arm. The matching slim belt wraps around the waist before leading to a sweeping skirt and long train. (The scene was filmed in August 2025 at the Museum of Natural History.)
While fans were counting down the days until the movie opened nationwide, the cast was busy jetsetting across the globe and putting on a fashion clinic with each and every red carpet premiere.

Streep, for her part, has been turning heads left and right. At the Mexico City premiere in March, the actress stunned in a navy, long-sleeved dress with gold button detailing down the front.
At the Seoul, South Korea press conference and premiere the following month, Streep donned a black bell-sleeved top that looked like a cape draped on the right side with matching black slacks.
On April 20, Streep attended the world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City, wearing a tiger-printed fur coat and black slacks. That same day she posed in a red, leather cape with black leather gloves and black pants and her character’s iconic black sunglasses for the photocall.
When it came to her press looks at the London premiere and subsequent press days, Streep wore an ivory shirt, red coat, black pants and red satin heels, once again giving a nod to the movie poster’s color scheme.
For the “A Night With Runway” photocall in London on April 22, Streep switched up her color palette. She donned a sparkly, navy coat dress, black tights and her sunglasses.
