Bluffton chef will compete on Food Network’s ‘Chopped.’ Here’s when to watch

An up-and-coming Bluffton chef is one of the contestants on Tuesday night’s episode of “Chopped” on the Food Network.

A photo of Chef Bernard Bennett, a James Beard semi-finalist who opened Okan in Old Town Bluffton last year, was posted on the restaurant’s Instagram page with the announcement he would be part of the television show.

The reality show pits a lineup of chefs against each other in a cooking battle. Chefs are given a basket of ingredients which must be used in their dishes.

The episode “Make No ‘Misteak’” premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. It is scheduled to be rebroadcast at 3 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17; 11 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22; 11 a.m. and 3 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23; 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12; and 1 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, according to the Food Network’s website.

The website offers this description: “In the first round, a trendy pastry in the basket inspires debate, and as the clock ticks down, the judges worry that not all of the chefs are on pace to finish their appetizers. Getting steaks in the second round seems like a gift, but cooking them perfectly is not a gimme. Then in the final round, the chefs must figure out how to make a hybrid comfort food go with a savory frozen item.”

Okan is located at 71 Calhoun St., Suite 100, in The Bridge Collective in Old Town Bluffton. The restaurant serves African-inspired dishes.

Bennett was named as a semifinalist in the Emerging Chef category of the James Beard Awards last January.
