Hilton Head singer Stee hints these singers from NBC’s ‘The Voice’ may perform locally
After 23 seasons, you’d think I would have watched at least one episode of NBC’s The Voice, even by skimming through the channels.
But no. It might be that it coincides with Monday night football.
It took Sterlin “Stee” Colvin Jr., a locally known musician on Hilton Head Island, to get me interested to turn on the television in the guest room.
Stee, who performs regularly in the Lowcountry with his band Ear Candy, is hard not to like.
If you’ve seen him perform, whether on the NBC reality show or in person, he owns the stage with his voice, moves and style.
He’s like that when you talk to him. He has a calming voice with presence and a laugh that makes you forget about any problem rattling around in your subconscious.
He has a way of befriending you, and I’m pretty sure that carries over to the show.
Here’s why.
Stee was on the phone when my colleague Lisa Wilson and I showed up Monday at Kind of Blue — a restaurant and live music venue — to interview him after he won his “Battle Round” against his team member Willie Gomez.
Stee’s father is a co-owner of the business and performs regularly at the south-end venue off Dunnagans Alley.
Stee ended the call somewhat abruptly but politely saying he had an interview to do.
After our reintroduction, we apologized for interrupting his phone call and hoped it wasn’t the show.
Stee threw his head back and belly laughed .
He had been up since 6 a.m. doing radio junkets and said that was a personal call. He was actually on the phone with Bias, a Tennessee native and another contestant on “The Voice” who wants to sing on Hilton Head.
In fact, Stee rattled off a number of names who want to perform on Hilton Head. (Watch the video above to find out who those are.)
While all of these young, talented singers want to perform here, I kept thinking, what if Stee could convince former One Direction member and heartthrob Niall Horan, one of the celebrity coaches on “The Voice” to come to the island. Could you imagine?
I thought Stee wouldn’t hold a grudge even though Horan and Reba McEntire stated that Gomez should have won the Battle Round, would he?
I asked. It was worth it.
