Love the orchestra? Know how to play? Today’s your lucky day

If you’re 13 or older, can read music proficiently and own a string instrument, the new Community Orchestra on Hilton Head Island might be looking for you.

Dominique Geer, director and teacher at the Arco Music Academy, has organized the orchestra for those who have played string instruments in high school, college or at some point in their lives and would like to return to music.

Music has always been as much for the musician’s enjoyment as the listener’s, according to Geer.

“I’m expecting a lot of people who are rusty to come back to their instruments,” she said.

Rehearsals will take place every Tuesday at the Island Lutheran Church at 4400 Main St. on the island and all instruments are welcome, Geer said, but there is no percussion on site. Information, cost and registration is available on the Arco Music Academy’s website, www.arcomusicacademy.com/orchestra.

For now, Geer said, the orchestra is not performance-oriented and members will first work on improving their skills.

She said she wanted the orchestra to be a nurturing and fun music-making experience.

“Come and play, do your best,” she said. “(There’s) not a lot of pressure.”
