Savannah Philharmonic to open season with thieving magpies and heroics
The Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will perform its first show of the season at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts, 32 Abercorn St., Savannah.
The concert will feature Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) and the world premiere of a violin concerto by composer Richard Sortomme, performed by Elmar Oliveira. Oliveira is the only American violinist ever to win the Gold Medal at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky International Competition and he performs regularly with the Boston Symphony, London Philharmonic and the Zürich Tonhalle.
The concert will conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, the “Eroica” (the “Heroic”).
