Four ways to hear 100 voices at once on Hilton Head Island
The Hilton Head Choral Society has announced its lineup of performances for the 2016-2017 season. The 100-voice ensemble has been performing on Hilton Head Island for 41 years.
— Summer Pops Concert: “This Land I Love” at 8 p.m. Sept. 9 at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head. This performance will celebrate the United States with a musical tribute to what America stands for. The evening will include “American Antrhem,” from Ken Burns’ documentary “The War”; Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”; and an all-Americana suite from Z. Randall Stroope, “American Rhapsody.” The chorus will also perform classics like “What a Wonderful World” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
— The Sounds of Christmas: “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” at 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head. This concert features a traditional carols and the iconic Christmas songs of Bing Crosby, such as “White Christmas” and “Little Drummer Boy.” Audience members are asked to bring a music-themed toy to be distributed through Deep Well and Bluffton Self Help.
— Hilton Head Choral Society Choral Festival at 7 p.m. April 2 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 24 Pope Ave., Hilton Head. Composer Paul Basler from the University of Florida will join the Choral Society along with collegiate and high school choruses from across the country to present an evening of musical diversity. Featuring Basler’s “Missa Brevis” and “Psalm 23,” this concert will provide each chorus with an opportunity to perform on their own before combining with the Choral Society singers.
— “America Sings! An Americana Celebration” at 7 p.m. May 28 at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head. This tribute to veterans and members of the Armed Forces will conclude the Choral Society’s 41st season.
