Author of ‘Civil War Captain and His Lady’ to sign books on Hilton Head

Gene Barr, author of “A Civil War Captain and His Lady: A True Story of Love, Courtship, and Combat,” will sign copies of his book at 1 p.m. July 31 at Barnes and Noble on Hilton Head Island.

The book tells the story of 27-year-old Irish immigrant Josiah Moore who meets 19-year-old Jennie Lindsay, a member of one of Peoria, Ill.’s most prominent families. The Civil War has just begun and Josiah is the captain of the 17th Illinois Infantry. Their courtship and romance, which came to light in an unpublished series of letters, forms the basis of “A Civil War Captain.” The story of Josiah, Jennie, the men of the 17th and their families tracks the toll on this nation during the war and allows readers to explore the often difficult recovery after the last gun sounded in 1865, according to a press release.
