More than a thousand shoppers turned out for The Art Market at Historic Honey Horn on Saturday, officials said.

In fact, the popular two-day event held by Coastal Discover Museum on Hilton Head Island saw close to 1,500 visitors on Saturday alone, organizers said.

Now in its 14th year, the arts and crafts show regularly draws in artists and craftsmen from across the country to feature everything from jewelry to paintings, to pottery and woodwork.

This year’s market showcased more than 80 vendors.

“I’m very impressed,” said Rachel Jones, a stained glass and mosaics artist from Charleston.

Jones, who does about seven shows a year, said this was her first time at The Art Market and she was definitely planning to return.

“It’s been pretty good, and the weather has been beautiful,” she said as she helped a customer with a necklace.

On the other side of the grounds, regulars to the market, Michael Smalls and Dino Badger, were working on sweetgrass baskets and bowls. Finished products were spread out on tables in front them.

The Bluffton-based artists and partners in the business said they enjoyed attending the event every year because it gives them a chance not only to meet people but to explain the history and culture behind their work.

“A lot of people have bought these baskets before,” he said. “But they’ve never seen them being made.”
