Hilton Head’s MLK events canceled because of COVID surge. What we know

Hilton Head Island’s MLK Committee for Justice announced Monday that events it planned to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day would be canceled.

A news release cited the risks of spreading COVID-19.

“Our priority is the health of our community,” the news release said. “Depending on how things play out in the coming months, we may look to re-imagine our events.”

The committee had planned activities during the week before the national holiday. A concert, multiple worship services and a cemetery cleanup were leading up to a Jan. 17 march, a memorial program featuring gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Mia McLeod, and a fellowship luncheon.

The news release recommended following the organization’s Facebook page for up-to-date information.
