These six Beaufort churches are historic and still relevant. See for yourself Saturday

A self-guided walking tour of six historic churches in the Beaufort area, which remain vibrant centers of faith, is scheduled for Saturday morning. Three noted historians and educators will explain the significance of the churches.

The churches that make up the tour are: The Parish Church of St. Helena, the Baptist Church of Beaufort, Wesley Methodist Church, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church and First African Baptist Church.

So much of the history and culture of Beaufort can be understood through the churches that for centuries have been part of the community, according to the South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS), the tour sponsor. The stories of the architecturally significant churches, SCHS adds, embrace male and female, young and old, Black and white.

The tour is open to the public and begins at 9:30 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. at Parish Church of St. Helena, 507 Newcastle St., Beaufort.

Larry Rowland, coauthor of the three-volume “History of Beaufort County,” John McCardell, southern historian and retired vice chancellor of Sewanee: The University of the South, and Stephen Wise, noted historian and director of the Parris Island Museum, will give an opening lecture and then answer questions at the conclusion of the tour.

Tickets for SCHS members are $40 per person or $70 per couple; for non-members, tickets are $50 per person or $90 per couple. For more information and to purchase tickets visit schistory.org/event/fall-tour-2021 or call (843) 723-3225, ext. 122.

The church visit is part of SCHS’s annual Fall Tour, which SCHS has hosted since the 1950s.
