Several events planned to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Beaufort County

Lowcountry groups on both sides of the Broad River have scheduled parades, services and musical performances to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Here's a list of local events to honor the civil rights icon:

  • Community-Wide Service: 7 p.m. at Queen Chapel AME Church at 114 Beach City Road on Hilton Head Island.

  • Martin Luther King Commemorative Service, featuring songwriter and troubadour Melanie DeMore: 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth Yam at 4501 Meeting St. on Hilton Head Island.

     
  • SATURDAY

  • Melanie DeMore will hold a Gullah music workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Main Street Theater, 3000 Main Street, on Hilton Head Island.

     
  • Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island annual gala: 6 p.m. at the Spanish Wells clubhouse at 1 Brams Point Road on Hilton Head Island. Tickets cost $75 and include an oyster roast and Lowcountry boil by Bluffton Oyster Co., cash bar and silent auction. This year's theme is "Honor the Music." Details: 843-681-3254

     
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet: 6 p.m. Saturday at Campbell AME Church at 25 Boundary Street in Bluffton. Tickets cost $35 for adults and $15 for children 16 and under. Hilton Head native and lawyer Chauncey Barnwell will be the event's keynote speaker.   • SUNDAY

  • Penn Center community sing service to honor King: 6:30 p.m. at the Frissell Community House, 16 Penn Center Circle West, on St. Helena Island. The event will feature readings and a night of gospel and praise music. Details: 843-838-2432 or visit www.penncenter.com.

     
  • MONDAY

  • Hilton Head Island's MLK Jr. Memorial Celebration: 10 a.m. march at Hilton Head Island High School, 71 Wilborn Road. A ceremony will be held at the school's Seahawk Cultural Center after the march and a free lunch will be held in the cafeteria from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

     
  • The Beaufort County Ministerial Alliance will host a parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr. at 10 a.m. in Beaufort. The parade will follow the city's traditional parade route, beginning at Rodgers and Boundary streets. The celebration will conclude at 11:30 a.m. at USCB’s performing arts

    center with W. Brown Marshel being the keynote speaker.

     
  • Bluffton's 31st Martin Luther King Jr. celebration: a 12:30 p.m. memorial service at Bluffton Town Hall at 20 Bridge Street, which will feature a youth program of singing, dancing, poetry and a slideshow. A memorial walk will follow the service and a 3 p.m. cookout at Oyster Factory Park.

     
  • At 7 p.m., Hilton Head's All Saints Episcopal Church will show the documentary "Carry It On -- A Musical Legacy" in the parish hall at 1003 Meeting Street. The documentary is about folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, who performed "If I Had a Hammer" and Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" at the 1963 March on Washington.

     
  • A community food drive to benefit the Sandalwood Food Pantry will continue through Monday. Non-perishable food items will be collected at all scheduled events on Hilton Head Island, according to All Saints Episcopal Church.
